Abundance New York (ANY) is seeking a Policy Director to lead the organization's policy development work and drive progress toward policy goals.

Reporting to ANY’s Executive Director, the Policy Director will lead the organization's policy development—conducting research, synthesizing inputs from partner organizations, writing detailed white papers on policy recommendations, and working with product and design staff to translate this work into crisp public-facing materials.

Moreover, the Policy Director will own coalition management towards the adoption of those policies by legislators and executive actors at both the city and state levels. They will closely collaborate with other team members on the stakeholder engagement necessary to shift political possibilities, and will contribute to communications work to drive policy narratives.

The role is hybrid, with most of the work conducted remotely but occasional in-person meetings in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The compensation for this role is $130,000 to $160,000, dependent on experience.

The Consultant’s responsibilities are as follows:

Policy Development: Research, data analysis, policy paper writing (50%)

  • Building on the Abundance Agenda, lead the organization's policy work to track, advance, and iterate on policy to advance organization goals
  • Track progress of existing policy recommendations, and identify opportunities to iterate and deepen policy proposals in response to new data, new challenges, and new opportunities
  • Conduct interviews with leading experts on housing, transit, climate, and good government
  • Synthesize research and policy recommendations from academic institutions, think tanks, government agencies, and advocacy groups
  • Identify relevant case studies from other jurisdictions that can inform New York City and state policy
  • Draft policy agendas and white papers tailored for policymakers, advocates, and partner organizations
  • Conduct analysis to determine the potential impacts of policy proposals on critical metrics related to affordability, safety, public health, and quality of life
  • Collaborate with ANY team to design data infrastructure that supports long-term tracking of policy outcomes, including scorecards or benchmarking tools for elected officials
  • Translate policy white papers into clear summaries for ANY’s website and public-facing materials, including supporting development of visualizations (e.g., charts, maps, infographics), dashboards, and interactive tools to make complex datasets engaging for broader audiences

Policy Progress: Coalition management, elite persuasion, supporting mass communications (50%)

  • Surface policy priorities from full Abundance Agenda for organization focus, e.g. based on urgency and ROI
  • Regularly meet with policymakers to identify opportunistic political windows to advance agenda policies
  • Lead stakeholder engagement strategy to move priority policies forward, identifying potential coalition partners and core legislative supporters
  • Manage coalitions around specific issue campaigns, making and leading agendas for coalition meetings, designing campaign strategy, and owning progress to goals
  • Represent Abundance NY in public discourse—writing op-eds and pieces on Abundance NY’s Substack, contributing to policy journals, appearing on panels and podcasts to drive elite conversation
  • Coordinate with lobbyists, PR consultants, and other stakeholders working to advance policy goals
  • Support digital and communications teams on the creation of content for broader audience engagement

Qualifications and requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in policy, research, data analysis, or consulting
  • Familiarity with ANY’s policy pillars (housing, transit, climate, and/or good government), ideally having worked on them in a New York context
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to distill complex data and policy issues into concise, persuasive language
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and manage many deliverables simultaneously
