DC Organizer
Greater Greater Washington
Position Overview
Greater Greater Washington (GGWash) is hiring a DC Organizer. This is an early- to mid-career role for a practiced organizer who will, primarily, manage our work with Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners (ANCs). The DC Organizer will also fortify GGWash’s base for participation in our policy priorities and, when appropriate, relevant public-engagement processes.
The DC Organizer will be managed by the DC Policy Director, work closely with the DC Policy Manager, and collaborate within the GGWash policy team, which includes the Maryland Policy Director and Maryland Policy Manager. They will also work in partnership with other teams, including editorial and engagement.
We encourage those who can bring a diverse perspective to our organization and our work, in terms of race, socioeconomic status, geographic diversity, sexual orientation, or gender identity, to apply.
Responsibilities
Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners (85% of time)
Electoral:
Since 2018, GGWash has endorsed candidates for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) seats in the District of Columbia. Working with the GGWash endorsements committee and under the supervision of the DC Policy Director, the DC Organizer will be responsible for tracking, recruiting, and training ANC candidates (including for special elections); managing the process of endorsing ANC candidates; and supporting GGWash-endorsed ANC candidates in key races. This work predominantly occurs between May and November of election years, which are typically even years in the District of Columbia.
Support and relationship management:
Following the general election, the DC Organizer will be responsible for organizing to advance GGWash’s advocacy agenda predominantly via Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. The DC Organizer, in consultation with the DC Policy Director, will develop a strategic approach to building the institutional knowledge and capacity of GGWash-endorsed ANC candidates, which may include such techniques as one-to-one meetings, fostering connections between ANCs with similar interests and relevant concerns, tracking ANC resolutions relevant to GGWash’s issues over time, and ensuring that District-government staff and decisionmakers are aware of a given ANC’s historical and current business if necessary.
Organizing:
GGWash advocates in support of particular policies, including those that would enable more homes to be built in more neighborhoods throughout the District. The rewrite of the Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan), as well as the implementation of the current Comp Plan through zoning amendments, are two of the current means by which District law could be changed to enable more homes to be built in more neighborhoods here. The DC Organizer will, as appropriate, bring ANCs into GGWash’s efforts on the Comp Plan and zoning amendments, which are led by the DC Policy Director.
The DC Organizer will be responsible for watching public hearings (including DC Council, Board of Zoning Adjustment, and Zoning Commission hearings) and, on occasion, writing and delivering testimony at them. They will need to develop a fair and productive approach to prioritizing commissions, commissioners, and their issues.
Other Responsibilites (15% of time)
-
The DC Organizer will periodically be expected to support GGWash’s broader advocacy work.
-
This position will also assist with some administrative and cross-organizational tasks, meetings, and processes, and take on other duties as assigned.
Preferred Competencies
-
You agree that there should be more housing, more affordable housing, and fewer trips by car in the District of Columbia. You’re committed to Washington, DC, and the greater Washington region.
-
You understand institutional racism's role in shaping public policy and have a demonstrated commitment to racial, social, and environmental justice, as well as advancing equity through changes to land use, housing, and transportation policy.
-
You possess the self-awareness to know what you don’t know, and the interest to find it out; the ability to engage constructively with good-faith, yet skeptical actors; and an understanding of power, politics, and the public sector, as well as an interest in parsing out the potential effects of proposed policies.
-
You seek to build professional relationships that are mutually beneficial, constructive, and joyful, not extractive, and have the capacity to build and maintain empathetic relationships with GGWash’s base of supporters, as well as high-level elected and appointed officials. You are able to keep people and their names straight and retain accurate and relevant information about individuals and organizations (without relying on AI to do so). You’re comfortable proactively reaching out to people, whether you know them or it’s a cold call.
-
You’re a good conversationalist and can intuit when people are or aren’t comfortable. You are able to sense people’s needs, work to establish if your sense is correct, determine if meeting those needs is possible, meet them if so, and effectively resolve any back-and-forth if not.
-
You’re punctual, and you competently manage your schedule.
-
You are able to efficiently, independently complete tasks, some of which are as complex as leading an endorsement process for several hundred races and some of which are as straightforward as ensuring that hyperlinks on a webpage are up-to-date. You deliver high-quality, detail-oriented work.
-
You can communicate clearly and directly in a timely fashion.
Preferred Qualifications
-
At least three years’ experience organizing people around certain policies or ideas. While an undergraduate and/or graduate degree requiring critical-thinking skills is an asset, neither is a substitute for work experience.
-
Fluency in the District’s physical and political geography. The DC Organizer will be working with Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners, the most hyperlocal form of governance in DC, whose commissions have “great weight” on executive-agency decisions and who are frequently in touch with DC Council offices. You’ll need to know, for example, where wards are, where ANCs are, and who are the major office-holders in DC without having to check.
-
Experience working in a professional environment where shared goals and deadlines require effective communication, use of office software, administrative tasks as required, and attention to detail.
-
Having served as an Advisory Neighborhood Commission is an asset, but not required.
Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time (40+ hours/week) exempt salaried position within a standardized organizational salary band that ranges from $70,298 - $93,072 per year. We have budgeted to hire in the lower half of this band, with opportunity for growth over time.
Greater Greater Washington offers a comprehensive suite of benefits for this position, including employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance with employer contribution; employer-paid long-term disability insurance, basic life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment insurance; an employer-matched 401(k) plan (up to 3%); a transit commuter stipend; and cell phone subsidy. Paid time off for this position includes: 20 days per year for vacation on an accrual basis, 20 days per year for sick leave, numerous holidays, winter break, and other forms of leave, including an optional paid sabbatical after five years of employment. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions in the applicable plan documents and/or Greater Greater Washington’s employee handbook and other policies, as modified from time to time.
Work Environment
At this time, GGWash has a flexible, hybrid work environment, with some in-person work required at the GGWash office in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, DC. Remote work requires access to a workspace with an Internet connection. A GGWash-owned laptop will be provided. Access to a car is not required.
Work hours are typically 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This role will involve attending some evening and weekend events.
About Greater Greater Washington
Greater Greater Washington is a nonprofit organization that works to advance racial, economic, and environmental justice in land use, transportation, and housing throughout Greater Washington.
Our work builds civic capacity and moves the needle on important issues, in service of a broader vision of a dense, growing Washington region with an abundant supply of quality housing, attainable at all income levels, and a regional transportation network that prioritizes the needs of underserved users and makes it safe and easy to travel without a car. We work in support of public processes, plans, and policymaking that embrace both our responsibility to care for people we don’t know personally, and the need for cities to be shared among people who are here now and who will come in the future.
