About Mason AI
Mason builds software that helps determine whether permit sets comply with building codes. The codes are getting more complex at just the same time that the workforce is shrinking, posing a real challenge to maintaining high standards for building safety. Mason gives plan reviewers superpowers by flagging code violations with visual evidence and code citations - that way, code professionals can get an extra pair of eyes from their most patient coworker, Mason. Mason has saved plan reviewers as much as two hours on the architectural review of a new SFR.
We are hiring a Building Official to bridge domain expertise, product, and go-to-market. This is a senior, high-trust role for someone who wants to shape how plan review evolves. You will not function as a traditional plan reviewer clearing projects. Instead, your time will be split roughly as follows:
  • ~70% customer-facing: working directly with customers, building trust, supporting onboarding, and representing Mason in the field
  • ~30% product-facing: guiding engineers on how codes are interpreted and applied in practice
This role requires frequent travel (3–4 trips per month) for customer visits, onboarding, and industry events. The engineering team will be based in San Francisco, but you can be remote if you are based outside of the SF Bay Area.
What You’ll Do
  • Build trust with customers as a domain authority and credible industry peer. Represent Mason at ICC Chapter meetings, ICC conferences, and other industry events.
  • Join in-person and virtual discovery sessions and onboarding with customers
  • Partner closely with the GTM Lead on messaging, positioning, and customer feedback loops
  • Try new product modules as we expand into additional code books, jurisdictions, and disciplines
  • Answer nuanced code interpretation questions from engineers
What Makes You a Fit
  • 8+ years of experience as a private plan reviewer (plans examiner, private provider, plan checker, third party permitter), building official, or equivalent role
  • A generalist's ability to do plan review across disciplines (building, structural, accessibility, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills — able to explain technical code issues clearly to both engineers and customers
  • Recognized industry presence (e.g., presented at ICC Chapters, ICC conferences, CALBO, or equivalent)
  • Leadership experience (e.g., managed a plan review team, building department, or major function)
Nice to haves: Advanced ICC certifications, PE license, CBO experience, or multi-state/multi-firm exposure
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary ($150k - $220k)
  • Meaningful early-stage equity (0.1% - 1%)
  • Free lunch and 7 pm dinners at the office.
  • Fully paid health insurance with over $1000/year in employer contributions to an HSA.
  • A 401(k) that accepts pre-tax and Roth contributions
  • Employer contributions to a commuter benefits account and a monthly wellness benefit.
  • Opportunity to shape the next era for plan review and code compliance

Compensation

The base pay range for this role is $150,000 – $220,000 per year.
