Recoding America Fund
What this is (and isn’t)
Recoding America is a new organization with an evolving team. We’re looking for talented, impatient people who believe the government operating model is broken and are optimistic and ambitious about the opportunity to fix it. This is not a posting for a specific position. It’s a standing invitation for people who want to work on one of the most important and neglected problems in the country: making American government deliver. If you share that conviction but don’t see an open role that fits, or if you’re not quite ready to apply but want us to know you exist, submit your information below.
We’re also invested in the growth of the broader state capacity field—not just our own team. If we think you’d be a strong fit for a partner organization pursuing aligned work, we’ll share your details with partners (with your permission). Whether your next role is with us or somewhere else in this movement, we want to help the right people find the right roles.
We plan to review these submissions regularly and will reach out if we want to chat further. This is an experiment from which we’ll test and learn; we may change how we structure this or retire it entirely if it doesn’t seem to be working. We aren’t able to respond individually to all submissions. We encourage you to check our careers page for specific openings and to resubmit if your experience or interests evolve. Reach out (info@recodingamerica.fund) if you have questions.
What We’re Looking For
We hire across a range of functions, experience levels, and engagement types. Depending on the need and the candidate, roles at Recoding America may be:
Full-time or part-time staff; full- or part-time Senior Advisors, Fellows, or Senior Fellows; or consultants
Spanning areas such as:
- Federal Policy: Developing ambitious legislative and executive-branch reforms and enabling them to take hold.
- State Initiatives: Partnering with governors and other state leaders across red, blue, and purple states on structural reforms to the state operating model.
- Workforce: Reforming civil service systems to enable governments to get the right people in the right roles.
- Procedure: Reforming statutes, regulations, policies, and practices to reduce compliance-oriented procedural cruft and enable timely and effective government action
- Digital: Shifting governments to the product operating model for more effective and responsive government digital services.
- Incentivizing Outcomes: Enabling overseers and other accountability actors (e.g., Congress and state legislatures, OMB, GAO, and state auditors) to more effectively create incentives for outcomes not compliance.
- AI: Infusing AI throughout the work of strengthening the government operating model. Making Recoding America an AI-native organization and identifying ways to use AI-enabled tools to strengthen connective tissue in the state capacity ecosystem.
- Ecosystem Development / Field-Building: Growing and strengthening the ideologically-diverse state capacity field, connecting organizations to each other, filling the gaps, and helping them set ambitious common goals to drive transformational change. Ensuring that we’re learning and applying lessons from other field-building efforts in areas unrelated to state capacity (from other policy domains, countries, and sectors).
- Strategic Communications & Narrative-Shaping: Building the narrative infrastructure and communications capacity the field needs to make the case for structural government reform to diverse audiences.
- Advocacy & Lobbying: Making the case to elected officials, the public, and other stakeholders for the need for structural government reform and why it matters to delivering policy outcomes from affordability to national security. Forging the political coalitions and navigating the interest group politics necessary to institutionalize reforms.
- Impact & Learning: Building frameworks and approaches for ensuring Recoding America and the field are testing whether and how our work is driving structural change, learning from our successes and failures, and adapting based on that learning.
- Philanthropic Partnerships: Cultivating and growing a portfolio of individual and institutional donors who see the high-leverage opportunity in investing in upstream structural change to improve the ability of American government to deliver.
- Operations: Building the internal infrastructure of a fast-moving start-up, e.g., tech- and AI-enabled workflows, people operations, grantmaking, executive support.
